Sale Summary 2011
Macquarie offered and sold 5 to $4,750 (equal top) and averaged $3,250 (highest). Top price was paid by Dave & Glenda Mitchell, Bairnsdale, VIC for an Ace family ram. Max Pilgrim, Minimay VIC bought one ram at $3,750, Keith Boatman, Crowlands VIC one at $3,000, John Witts, Collarenebri NSW one at $2,750 and first time buyer Linda Schneider purchased one ram at $2,000.

Lifting their offering of Dohne rams by 39 to 167 to cater for all their clients’ requirements, Macquarie Dohne stud, Warren still managed a total clearance of all rams for the third year in a row, to average an impressive $2150. Stud Co principal Greg McCann addressed buyers prior to the sale saying that the Dohne breed has established itself on the landscape of the sheep industry, the biggest improvements in the breed has been in wool quality. Dohnes ewes are now being realised as a financially productive commodity he said. With the forecast for rain and the skies looking promising, the script could not have been written any better, with the first drop falling as the majority of the utes, loaded with their purchases where heading up the driveway. Buyers from across New South Wales and Queensland shared in the draft with thirty three sheep producers all taking home rams, which sold from $1000 to $4000. Highlights of the sale were the appearance of new faces and the confidence return clients had in the rams. Mike and Annie O’Brien, “The Brigalows”, Carinda and Mark and Miranda Winning, “Mona Station” Bollan Queensland paid the $4000 equal sale top price. Mr O’Brien said he was very pleased with their 10 rams they purchased that averaged $2820. It was a very good assembly of top quality young rams in the sale, which catered for all grades and price levels, he said. The Winning family, Bollon, Queensland who purchased at the first National Dohne sale in NSW in 2002 took home six rams, which included their $4000, AA, 133.07 indexing equal top priced sire, to average $3067. Walgett producers were prominent with repeat clients Dennis and Trish O’Brien, “Cryon Station” and the Evans family “Netherby” Walgett securing 12 and 11 rams respectively to average $2766 and $2255. Other buyers included Neil Arnold and sons, Condobolin who paid to $3400 for 8, averaging $2550, while Caranga Pastoral Company; Garah averaged $2116 for their twelve sires. Mr Arnold said he was looking for rams with nourishment to handle the soil type on their property North West of Condobolin. The Macquarie rams are big up standing sheep with an excellent selection available, as the quality holds up the whole way through the draft. Volume buyer was Chris Carrigan, Welbon Grazing, Garah who joins 3000 to 3500 Dohne ewes, averaged $2092 for his draft of thirteen. Mr Carrigan said he liked Macquarie Dohne genetics for the price he attracts for his surplus sheep sales, their fertility and wool production. Macquarie Dohne stud have a diverse genetic base and provide excellent client relationships, he said. Other significant buyers included return purchasers David Hawker, Cunnamulla, Queensland and Bill Yates, “Amondale”, Garah also securing nine rams, while the Jackson family, “Tirlta Station”, Broken Hill averaged $1254 for thirteen. In the memory of Tom Nadin the proceeds of lot 150 were donated to the Warren Sensorimotor Programme. The Warren Sensorimotor Programme is a community funded programme for children in Warren, which provides children with Occupational Therapy, Speech and Physiotherapy assistance. In an admirable gesture the Evans family, Dennis, Trish, Mike and Annie O’Brien, Walgett along with their families purchased the ram for $2200 and donated the ram back to be auctioned again, which in turn was purchased by the Low family, Wyalong for $1400. The sale was conducted by Elders and Landmark with Paul Dooley and John Settree as the auctioneers.

Sale Summary 2011
The inaugural Premier Dohne Sire Sale at the Royal Adelaide Showground recently set a record for the highest price paid for a Dohne at auction – $21,000. Studs from South Australia, Victoria, NSW and Western Australia offered 20 top-quality
stud sires for sale, drawing keen interest from predominantly interstate buyers. Macquarie sold their three rams to $6500 and average $4833. Picking up the $6500 ram was TG&RC Browne, Chirniminup stud, Nyabing, WA. The other two went to the Havelock Park Stud, Stratford, at $5000 and Welbon Grazing Co, Garah, NSW, at $3000.

BIDDING was in favour of those in the buying gallery at the sixth annual Naracoorte Dohne Invitation Ram sale on Wednesday last week, with 10 rams selling at the $1000 base price. In the breakdown, six Victorian, NSW and South Australian studs sold 28 of their 38 A and AA-graded Dohne rams, averaging $1310.
Macquarie offered and sold 8 rams for an average $1526.

Sale Summary 2011
The sale kicked off with Macquarie Dohnes selling one stud ram at $7000. Craig Robertson, Havelock Park, was keen to secure the stud sire that carries bloodlines back to the Macquarie Majestic family that had been used as a foundation sire in the Havelock Park Stud. The AA ram has excellent meat and wool characteristics and an index of 132.21. David and Glenda Mitchell, Bairnsdale, bought the toppriced flock ram, also offered by Macquarie, to be used over their 800-head commercial flock. Selling direct to butchers at Paynesville, David Mitchell was impressed with the ram’s shape and excellent figures.
A&R Everett, Rokewood Junction, bought six rams to $3000. Having used Dohne rams for the past three years, the Everetts
have seen an increase in lambing percentages and will use the rams over Merino and F1 ewes. Tassie buyer David Nicholson, Campbell Town, bought three rams av $1600 and Roberts agent Brett Cox bought an AA ram at $2700 for O’Connors, Benham, Avoca. Macquarie offered and sold 10 rams to $7,000(top price) and averaged $3,608 (highest).

SOUTHERN Dohne Breeders Group’s last sale for 2011 was held at Campbell Town recently, where 33 of 40 rams catalogued sold to $2100 and averaged $1351. Kardinia Dohnes, Corowa,NSW, sold the top-priced ram and av $1560 for its five-ram offering. Macquarie sold six rams to $2000, paid by Greenhill Trading, Campbell Town, to av a sale high of $1600. Uardry Dohnes, Hay, NSW, sold rams to $1700, av $1440, with JR Nicholson & Sons, Campbell Town, paying the top price. The Nicholsons also took a liking to rams from Havelock Park, Stratford, av $1000 for two. A $1333 ram av was achieved by DD Dohnes, Moama, NSW, which topped at $1600. Somercotes, Ross, was active throughout the sale, purchasing two DD Dohne rams and 12 overall to a top of $1800 twice, av $1283. Tasmanian vendor Pineview Dohnes, Evandale, sold nine rams to $1700 – paid by Esk Farms, Longford – and av $1222 overall. Brett Gleeson, Hayes, bought the majority of the Glenaroua Dohne offering at an av of $1000. The result capped off an excellent run of ram sales across southeast Australia for the Southern Dohne Breeders Group, ensuring the dual-purpose benefits of the breed will be enjoyed by many repeat buyers and a good number of new purchasers.
